The Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode has claimed that only 600,000 of the state’s over 22 million residents are paying tax on a regular basis.
This represents about 3% of the population according to the figures presented by the governor
This deplorable rate is preventing the state government from improving infrastructure in the state, says the governor.
Particularly, Ambode linked the poor tax compliance rate to the recent flooding of certain areas of the state such as Lekki and Banana Island
“Nobody takes it as their business that the new road I am using, I need to pay something,” he said
This continues the lamentation of government over the pitiable tax contribution rate, which the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, claims to be just about 6%, one of the lowest in the world.
