DEER Nigeria Launches App to Ease Cooking Gas, Energy Crisis

  • DEER Nigeria launches V3 of its energy platform today, offering on-demand ordering of cooking gas, diesel, and electricity tokens as the country’s LPG supply deficit reaches 400 metric tons per day.

Nigeria’s cooking gas market is in crisis. The 12.5kg cylinder that cost ₦16,250 in April now sells for ₦18,750 as of this week — a 15.3% increase in a single month — and supply is tightening further.

Market checks published on May 13, 2026, show that only three depots: Dangote Refinery, Ardova Plc, and Navgas, currently maintain commercial LPG volumes in the Lagos market. Independent retailers are scrambling for stock. Industry sources warn that if the supply squeeze persists, prices could accelerate beyond their current trajectory, mirroring the October 2025 spike when a supply chain disruption briefly pushed cooking gas to ₦3,000 per kilogram in parts of Lagos.

It is into this market that DEER Nigeria is launching the third version of its digital energy platform today.

DEER Nigeria, operated by Damaje Engineering and Energy Resources Limited, is positioning V3 as the country’s first AI-powered energy procurement platform; one that predicts when a household or business will run out of a given energy type and enables automatic restocking before the disruption occurs. Users can order cooking gas, diesel, electricity tokens, and solar solutions from a single mobile interface, with delivery to their address.

The timing is commercially significant. Nigeria’s LPG market has been structurally strained throughout 2026. A joint analysis published by NewsScroll Nigeria and Nairametrics earlier this quarter found that while Nigeria maintained a national gas production rate of approximately 4.832 billion standard cubic feet per day in Q1, a growing share of that output ( reaching 62% by the end of March) was being absorbed by NLNG Limited for export, leaving the domestic market undersupplied. The resulting deficit sent retail cooking gas prices as high as ₦1,550 per kilogram, and the shortfall has not materially improved heading into May.

The supply chain problem DEER is trying to solve

The platform’s commercial proposition is rooted in a straightforward observation: Nigeria’s energy supply problem is not primarily a production problem. It is a distribution and access problem. Nigeria produces enough LPG to meet approximately 87% of domestic demand, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. Diesel is widely available. Electricity tokens can be purchased digitally. But the informal supply chains through which most households and businesses access these commodities, a gas vendor contacted by phone, a diesel supplier found through word of mouth, a token bought through USSD, offer no pricing transparency, no delivery guarantees, and no mechanism for proactive restocking.

DEER’s platform is built to close that gap. Its AI engine monitors users’ consumption patterns and triggers restocking requests before supplies run out. A dual wallet system applies bonus credits before cash balances, and a loyalty programme rewards every transaction: one point per ₦100 spent, redeemable as platform credit, with a 5% instant credit on every wallet top-up.

“The greatest barrier to Nigeria’s energy transition isn’t just infrastructure — it’s trust. By building a digital marketplace that guarantees transparent pricing, verified quality, and reliable delivery, we are removing the ‘anxiety’ from energy procurement.”

— Abdulmajeed Amussah, Founder & CEO, DEER Nigeria

The market context

The Lagos energy market that DEER is entering is under pressure from multiple directions simultaneously. The Middle East conflict that escalated in early 2026 drove Brent crude above $84 per barrel, with immediate pass-through to Nigerian fuel prices. Diesel, which averaged ₦1,361.57 per litre in January 2026 according to NBS data, has moved significantly since then. Global LPG supply tightened as shipping costs and insurance premiums rose with oil prices. Domestically, the government’s Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee, established in response to a 25% drop in gas-to-power supply between January and March, has yet to deliver visible market stabilisation.

For residential users, the arithmetic is increasingly painful. The average Lagos household, spending ₦50,000 per month on cooking gas, diesel, and electricity tokens, is facing costs that have risen materially over the past few weeks. For small businesses, the impact on margins is direct and compounding.

DEER’s subsidiary, Fuelonomics Hydrocarbons Innovations Limited (FHIL), adds a supplementary angle: as an authorised Nigerian distributor of SulNoxEco™ fuel-efficiency products, the company can help existing generator users reduce their diesel consumption, addressing the cost problem on both the demand and supply sides.

What the platform needs to prove

DEER is not the first company to identify Nigeria’s energy distribution gap as a technology problem. The question its V3 launch needs to answer is whether a consumer app can build sufficient trust, logistical reliability, and pricing consistency to do what informal supply chains have never managed consistently: get energy to the right household at the right time, before it runs out. DEER’s model works with existing vendors and gas operators, integrating them into a structured, digital ecosystem rather than replacing them; improving how they operate and what customers can expect from every transaction.

The loyalty and wallet structure is designed to lock in repeat behaviour: the 5% wallet top-up credit and automatic bonus balance application both reduce the effective cost of every subsequent order, creating a financial incentive to stay on the platform. The company is targeting 2,000 cumulative sign-ups by the end of June as an early adoption benchmark.

Whether that target is achievable will depend partly on execution and partly on whether the supply chain pressures currently driving cooking gas prices higher will help or hinder a new entrant in the market. Scarcity tends to concentrate purchasing power with established informal networks rather than dispersing it to new platforms but it also creates the strongest possible case for an alternative.
