The Nigerian federal government is set to introduce a “green surcharge on imported vehicles” as part of its ambitious plan to boost tax revenues.

The MTEF document lays out a total of 18 strategies aimed at enhancing Customs revenue collection between 2024 and 2026, with point XIII focusing on the introduction of a green surcharge on imported vehicles.

So, to own a beat-up old and mostly accidented car from abroad is now considered a luxury by the Nigerian government. Perhaps in their view, the average Nigerian should either be trekking or patronising the inefficient public transport system while their political leaders and representatives are treated to brand new exotic and luxury SUVs at the expense of the public treasury.
