The anointed candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Tajudeen Abbas, has emerged as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Abbas pulled 353 votes to thrash the other contestants, outgoing Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, and Sani Jaji, who scores 3 votes each.
Abbas, the lawmaker representing Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, was elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives in an open voting system on Tuesday at the National Assembly complex, where the elected members of the lower chamber openly declared who they were voting for.
Abbas, who has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2011, was subsequently sworn in as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives succeeding Femi Gbajabiamila who is now the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
Kalu elected Deputy Speaker unopposed
Meanwhile, Benjamin Kalu, a member of the House of Representatives from the Bende Federal constituency in Abia State, has emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly, after he was adopted by members-elect.
Kalu was nominated for the position by Babajimi Benson from Lagos State and seconded by Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim from Yobe State.
Kalu, who was also the preferred candidate of the governing APC for the Deputy Speakership position, emerged unopposed at the inauguration of members-elect of the lower chamber at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Tuesday.
