With one round left in the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Akwa United have been declared winners of this season after hitting 71 points in 37 games.
The competition which began on Dec. 27 of 2020 is scheduled to end on Thursday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Akwa United’s win on Sunday has taken them nine points ahead of second-placed Nasarawa United of Lafia and third-placed Enyimba International of Aba who have 62 points each.
This will be the first league title for the 25-year-old club according to NAN, after beating MFM FC of Lagos 5-2 in their week 37 match. This adds to their 2013 Federation Cup and 2018 Aiteo Cup win.
Last Season’s Champions, Plateau United are currently 9th on the table with 51 points, while runners up last season Enyimba are 3rd with 62 points.
The MPFL began on Dec. 27 of 2020 is scheduled to end on Thursday, this win will also make the UYo based side qualify for the qualifying rounds of the CAF Champions league.
