Turkish Airlines reacts to Nairametrics report on cancelled flights

Following Nairametrics report, which disclosed that Turkish Airlines has cancelled some flights across international airports in Nigeria, the airline has made known that affected passengers of the several cancelled flights would be refunded.

Nairametrics had reported that the airline cancelled some of its flights scheduled for March.

In a statement released by the company and obtained by Nairametrics, the airline said these flights were cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. It said it had been changing its flight schedule to several destinations around the globe in accordance with international and national authorities.

“We would like to inform our passengers that due to the suspension of other routes, several of our flights to/from Nigeria will be undergoing cancellations during March.

“Passengers with tickets to the cancelled flights will be able to refund or change their tickets free of charge until the end of May if they start the process until March/April depending on the route,” Turkish airline said.

Speaking further on the coronavirus outbreak, the airline said it would continue to monitor the latest developments on the situation with the national and international health authorities in order to take appropriate precautions.

It said that ever since World Health Organization declared the potential risk of the virus, all the airline did was in accordance with the recommendations and instructions of World Health Organization, IATA, and related national and international authorities.

Health: Nigeria records first case of coronavirus

Recall that Nigeria’s first index case of the disease was a passenger of Italian origin who arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, via Turkish Airlines.

What you should know: The World Health Organization recently characterised the coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic due to the manner of the spread and severity of the outbreak, along with a lack of action taken to combat it. According to WHO Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the number of cases and deaths is certain to grow in the coming days and weeks.
