Apapa-Tin Can road would be shut for repairs by the Federal Government for 72 hours from 12 am December 7.

According to Punch, the Director, Federal Highways, Southwest, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Funsho Adebiyi, during a tour of the Apapa/Oshodi Road project on Friday disclosed that the Mile 2–Tin Can road would also be closed.

The Apapa/Oshodi road project is expected to be completed on schedule with the contractor having agreed to continue work during the festive periods. Mr Adebiyi stated that to ease movement during the repairs, trailer drivers had been asked to move their trucks from the restricted portions of the road and they had been complying.

“We will be using concrete cement for the palliative work. All the stakeholders have agreed to put heads together to deliver this project. To allow for speedy palliative repairs on the inbound, truck movement will be restricted by the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Ports Authority.

“Our tanker drivers are lawless but they have agreed to obey lane discipline this time. As a matter of fact, they have agreed to enforce it themselves. They have also agreed to maintain their trucks so that there won’t be any breakdown on the road,” said Adebiyi.

Meanwhile, Mr Kayode Opeifa, Vice Chairman, Presidential Task Team on Apapa Restoration of Law and Order, stated the palliative nature of the work would aid the movement of motorists during the repairs. He added that restriction of movement would be for 72 hours.

The Federal Government had in 2018 started the expedition towards finding a permanent solution to the gridlock on the Apapa area by reconstructing the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonsoki-Ojota Expressway. The project is expected to be completed by December 2020 but efforts are being made to make it earlier.

The general public has been urged to remain calm with the assurance that the discomfort would be temporary, as the project is expected to complete on schedule.
