Cornerstone Insurance leads this week’s gainers as NSE closes on negative note

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) ended the last trading week, and indeed the month of August, on a negative note. The All Share index fell by 1.63% during the week to close at 34,848.45 basis points. The index depreciated by 5.86% in August, and is down 8.88%, year to date.

37 equities appreciated in price during the week, higher than 15 in the previous week. 34 equities depreciated in price, lower than 45 equities of the previous week, while 98 equities remained unchanged lower than 109 equities recorded in the preceding week.

These are the top gainers and losers for the week:

Gainers

Portland Paints and Products Nigeria Plc

Portland Paints and Products was the best performing stock on the Exchange this week. The stock gained 20.65%, opening at N2.47 and closing at N2.98, up N0.51.

AIICO Insurance Plc

AIICO Insurance opened at N0.70 and closed at N0.82, up N0.12 or 17.14%.

The company this week sent a notice to the NSE informing investors of an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) on the 5th of October 2018. Agenda is to, if deemed fit, obtain shareholders approval for a private placement amounting to N5.28 billion.

PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc

PZ Cussons Nigeria appreciated by 14.94% during the week. The stock opened at N13.05 and closed at N15. Year to date, the stock is down 27.18%.

The company yesterday released its results for the financial year ended May 2018.

Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc

Flour Mills opened at N21.30 and closed at N24.30, up N3.00 or 13.02%. Year to date, the stock is down 16.21%.

Diamond Bank Plc

Diamond Bank gained 11.82% during the week. The stock opened at N1.10 and closed at N1.23, up N0.13. Year to date, the stock is down 18%.

The bank, this week, issued a press statement denying any form of wrongdoing with regards to a fine imposed on it by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following its investigation of foreign exchange remittances by MTN Nigeria.

Eterna Oil Plc

Eterna Oil Plc opened at N6 and closed at N6.70, up N0.70 or 11.67%. Year to date, the stock is up 65.02%.

Niger Insurance Plc

Niger Insurance gained 10% during the week. The stock opened at N0.40 and closed at N0.44 up N0.04. Year to date, the stock is down 12%.

Caverton Offshore Group Plc

Caverton Offshore Group rounds up the top gainers for the week with a 9.60% gain. The stock opened at N1.77 and closed at N1.94, up N0.17. Year to date, the stock is up 50.39%.

Losers

Ikeja Hotels Plc

Ikeja Hotels was the worst performing stock this week, declining by 18.64%. The stock opened at N2.79 and closed at N2.27, down N0.52. Year to date, the stock is up 27.53%.

First Aluminium Plc

First Aluminium declined by 15% this week. The stock opened at N0.40 and closed at N0.34, down N0.06. Year to date, the stock is down 32%.

GSK Consumer Nigeria Plc

GSK Consumer Nigeria opened at N15.30 and closed at N13.10, down N2.20 or 14.38%. Year to date, the stock is down 39.38%.

Forte Oil Plc

Forte Oil opened at N23 and closed at N20, down N3 or 13.04%. Year to date, the stock is down 54% and is currently trading at a 5-year low.

Skye Bank Plc

Skye Bank shed 10.53% this week. The stock opened at N0.57 and closed at N0.51, down N0.06. Year to date, the stock is up 2%.
