Nigerian consumers may have a good reason to cheer soon as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has put in place steps to allow customers roll over unused data. Executive Vice Chairaman of the commission Prof. Umar Danbatta made this known at the Port Harrcourt International Trade Fair. He also mandated staff at the zonal level to take the campaign to the grassroots.
“On this issue of data roll over, the Commission will soon issue a directive to the service providers to give 14 days window to the subscribers to enable them roll over their unused data, even if they do not renew on the expiration of data.”
Why is this good news ?
Consumers are often under pressure to renew their data packages before expiry in order not to lose data left over. Data packages in Nigeria are usually daily, weekly, or monthly.
The Nigerian Communications Commission came into existence in 2003 after then President Obasanajo signed a bill passed by the National assembly into law. The NCC’s functions include f== issuing telecommunications licences and carrying out oversight of their operations.
The NCC in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had recently prevented a consortium of banks from taking over Etisalat Nigeria (now known as 9Mobile) for defaulting on repayment of a $1.2 billion loan. The two regulators subsequently set up an interim board while the bans have appointed Barclays Africa to midwife the sale of the telco.
