Nigerian entrepreneurs have continued making waves on a global scale as Jim Ovia receives AAI 2017 Business Award. Recognizing his business leadership and his philanthropy, the African-American Institute (AAI), awarded the Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, with the AAI 2017 Business Leader Award a few days ago, on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States.

The AAI set up in 1953, was created with the intent of aiding Africa’s human capacity for development through training and education. the Institute recognizes the efforts of African’s who have been able to attain distinguishing achievements in various fields with the intent to present the winners at the high profile stage of the United Nations General Assembly as representatives of great achievements in Africa.

Other recipients of various awards by AAI this year include;

President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana – National Achievement

Nicole Amarteifio – Leadership in African Media and Arts

Bozoma Saint John (Chief Brand officer, UBER) – Innovation and Technology

There can hardly be complaints as Jim Ovia receives AAI 2017 Business Award because he is really a leading entrepreneur in Africa and has many beneficiaries of his philanthropic work. From the inception of Zenith Bank till July 2010 when he resigned, he was at the helm of affairs for about 20 years. About 4 years later (2014), he was reappointed chairman of the same bank. He founded James Hope College, Agbor Delta state as well as the Jim Ovia Foundation which is focused on providing scholarship to the less privileged; and the Youth Empowerment and ICT Foundation which focuses on improving the socio-economic welfare of Nigerian Youths.

Ovia’s philanthropic moves have benefited thousands who are now professionals in different skills. His business prowess should not be overlooked either. This AAI Annual Awards is a great event that should see more participation from  Nigerian entrepreneurs, as Jim Ovia has set the pace. It’s ‘high profile stage’ is something every African entrepreneur can as well aspire to.
