Top 10 Nigerian Movies Gross Over N1 billion Naira in 2016

Despite the recession, Nigerians came out in large numbers to watch indigenous movies in cinemas last year. According to a report from Businessday, the top ten grossing Nollywood movies made over N1 billion naira in takings last year. Over a hundred percent increase from 2015’s figure of N4oo million naira.

The report indicates Ebonylife’s The Wedding Party,  which was directed by Kemi Adetiba and had a star studded cast made over N200 million naira at the box office last year.

Comedian AY’s A Trip To Jamaica which featured himself, Funke Akindele and several others came second with N168 million naira in box office receipts. Wives On Strike directed by actress turned film maker Omoni Oboli and starring herself, Uche Jombo, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha and many others made over N71 million naira in 2016.

Ace producer and director Kunle Afolayan’s The CEO had box office receipts of over N60 million naira last year. 50, a 2015 release by Mo Abudu’s Ebonylife productions continued its winning streak grossing N50 million naira last year. The movie had box office receipts of N50 million in 2015. It’s Her Day, a romantic movie produced by popular comedian Bovi starring himself Adunni Ade, Toni Tones and several other talented acts grossed N55 million in 2016.
