Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole on Sunday announced a new minimum wage of N25,000 with effect from May 1, 2016 for workers.
Oshiomhole disclosed this while addressing a rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to mark this year’s Workers’ Day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
“With effect from today, the new minimum wage for government workers shall now be N25,000, and the new minimum wage will cut across board”, he said.
Workers nationwide under the umbrella of the Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) are currently agitating for a review of the current minimum wage from N18, 000 to N56, 000.
Oshiomhole will be the first state governor to review this request. Will he be able to execute this new salary policy or is he laying a booby trap for the next government, or should it be called a parting gift to civil servants his tenure as Governor of Edo State expires later on this year?
