The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has sealed a supermarket in Guzape, Abuja, over multiple consumer protection violations.

This was disclosed in a statement shared by the Commission on its official X platform following an enforcement operation triggered by customer complaints.

The action comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of retail outlets over pricing transparency and product safety standards.

What FCCPC is saying

The Commission said the enforcement team uncovered several infractions during the inspection, including discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout prices, as well as products displayed without price tags.

  • “During the inspection, the Commission identified several potential consumer protection violations, including differences between shelf prices and checkout prices, products displayed without price tags, expired products offered for sale, improper storage of perishable items, and suspected counterfeit products, including rice, which were confiscated,” they stated

According to the FCCPC, the supermarket has been sealed pending further regulatory action.

The agency reiterated that businesses are required to maintain transparent pricing, ensure product safety, and treat consumers fairly at all times.

It noted that the findings from the inspection will undergo further review, after which appropriate sanctions or regulatory measures will be applied.

The Commission has urged members of the public to report suspicious or unfair market practices as part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection nationwide.

Get up to speed

The latest enforcement action follows a string of recent crackdowns by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission across different sectors over consumer rights violations.

  • Just recently, the Commission sealed Paradise Estate in Life Camp Extension, Abuja, after multiple complaints from buyers who allegedly paid in full for housing units that were not delivered.
  • According to the FCCPC, the developer failed to respond to repeated summons and regulatory directives, prompting the Commission to intervene after exhausting administrative options.
  • The agency has maintained that such enforcement actions are necessary to protect consumers from unfair practices and ensure compliance with existing regulations across Nigeria’s markets.

Nairametrics previously reported that the Commission has sealed multiple facilities over similar complaints, including the TLSContact visa application centre in Abuja, over alleged obstruction of investigation and failure to address consumer complaints.

What you should know

Last year, the Commission inaugurated a Joint Market Monitoring Taskforce in Abuja, empowering it to seal shops, warehouses, and outlets found to be selling unsafe or substandard products, as part of efforts to strengthen market oversight.

  • They raided Utako Market in Abuja, sealing several shops over the alleged buying and selling of local rice re-bagged as foreign brands by market cartels. The operation was carried out with the support of police officers and other security operatives
  • The Commission has urged members of the public to report suspicious or unfair market practices as part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection nationwide.
