Emeka Emuwa, Chairman of Verod Holdings and a veteran of African financial markets, has been named a recipient of the Citi Distinguished Alumni Award in Leadership.

The recognition, reserved for a select group of former executives across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), marks only the second time in over 40 years that a Nigerian has received the honor.

The first Nigerian recipient was Olayemi Cardoso, the former Chairman of Citibank Nigeria and the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

A Legacy of Institutional Transformation

Emuwa’s career serves as a roadmap for the evolution of the pan-African banking sector. In 2005, he became the first Nigerian to be appointed Chief Country Officer and CEO of Citibank Nigeria, following a 25-year tenure in which he led operations across eight markets across East, West, and Central Africa.

His post-Citi career is defined by large-scale capital deployment, restructuring, and an illustrious footprint of non-executive leadership of African banking institutions:

  • Union Bank of Nigeria: As Group Managing Director and CEO for eight years, Emuwa orchestrated a $500 million recapitalization and a full-scale institutional turnaround.
  • Africa Finance Corporation (AFC): As former Chairman, he oversaw a multilateral institution that has deployed more than $10 billion into infrastructure projects across the continent.
  • Private Equity Leadership: He currently chairs Verod Holdings, a leading Africa-focused private equity firm, and previously chaired Tangerine Financial (UK).

The conferment of this award coincides with a pivotal era for African finance. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), sub-Saharan Africa’s growth is projected to accelerate to 4.6% in 2026, positioning the continent as a global growth frontier. In Nigeria, the IMF has revised growth forecasts upward to 4.4%, driven by ongoing macroeconomic stabilization and financial sector reforms.

Emuwa’s recognition highlights the increasing global focus on the individuals who have successfully bridged the gap between international banking standards and local market complexities during this high-growth cycle.

An alumnus of Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management, INSEAD, and the University of Lagos, Emuwa is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (UK) and the Institute of Bankers (Nigeria).

About the Citi Distinguished Alumni Award

The Citi Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes former employees who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the financial industry and their communities post-tenure. It is considered the highest honor the institution bestows upon its former executive talent.
