OPay customers panic over alleged fraudulent withdrawals, company reacts

Some customers of fintech company, OPay were on Sunday thrown into panicky mode as a video of some people complaining about fraudulent withdrawals surfaced online.

In the video, some agents of OPay stormed the Alender House Office of the company in the Alausa area of Ikeja, to protest what they described as unauthorized withdrawal from their accounts.

According to them, they had been experiencing frequent unauthorized withdrawals from their accounts and they had complained to the company, but nothing was being done.

They also said they had reported the matter to the police to help them in recovering their stolen money.

  • “Huge sums of money were unscrupulously taken away from our accounts. Balances of our accounts were removed, some were transferred to other banks, and some were used to purchase airtime, others were transferred to different OPay accounts that we do not have any dealings with,” a leader of the agents who spoke on camera stated.

The video prompted many to be worried about the safety of their money in the digital bank. However, a check on the video shows that it first surfaced online in August 2021, which shows that the event was not recent.

OPay also on Sunday reacted to the video by saying it was old.

Panick withdrawal

However, the company’s clarification came too late for some customers who had out of panic withdrawn all their money from the fintech account to avoid falling victim.

Reacting to the company’s clarification on the video, a customer of OPay identified as Olanrewaju Abdulyekeen, said:

  • “I have been a victim of many scams recently, thank God I was able to move my money out of your account. Communication is key. Learn to communicate with your customers when you have issues or crises.”

Another customer of the bank posted a screenshot of his OPay account showing a balance of N1.48. “I have withdrawn all my money,” he said.

OPay’s reaction

Assuring the customers that the platform is secure and their money safe, OPay in a statement released on Sunday, stated:

  • “Our attention has been drawn to a certain old video that resurfaced on some social media platforms regarding alleged fraudulent activities on some OPay Agent accounts.
  • “We wish to state that the allegations are dated and have been resolved in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders. We implore our customers and the general public to ignore and disregard the video and its content. We remain committed to protecting our users from any fraudulent activity or scam as customer data protection is our priority.”

I am also a victim. A sum of Forty Nine Thousand Naira was withdrawn from my account two times on day and time by an unknown person. So Ninety Eight Thousand Naira was withdrawn from my account the same time. I have reported it to Opay about two months ago and have not heard anything from them since then.

I’ve been using Opay for more than 5years and I haven’t experienced such a thing.
I had incident today, a man called me claiming to work with opay and asking me if I’ve collected the on going bonus opay is giving to customers and I said no. He then said his going to help me out and that I should not share my information to strangers. He then said I should check my message and read out the digit for him. I call out 419 and he hang up the call.
If I had given out the digit attached in the message, he would have emptied my account.
So please, let’s be careful because the bad eggs are everywhere.

I use Opay for almost all my transactions and the only issue I had was when I transferred money from my account to my Opay account which I was debited by my bank and didn’t receive the money on my Opay account, l complained to my bank and I was asked wait for seven working days, but on the third day I decided to also lodge a complain at Opay office and they promise to complain to my bank within 24hrs and I received the money in less than 6hrs from the time of complain. I believe is reliable and efficient.

They cannot take responsibility if the fault is as a result of your own carelessness. That’s why they can’t make customer such promise, even banks can’t bcus customers can be careless with their bank details at times.

I enjoyed using the app but for now I won’t use it again to avoid falling a victim.

Well! You have every right to do whatever with your money and move it anywhere you pls.

Just know that, all victims have a LOSE GUARD moment. But no one will wash their dirty linen in public and say the embarrassing story of how they lost guard.

If you lose guard, even if your money is saved with CBN, it won’t protect you.

I believe being a registered company and approved by the company should arrest the case at the actual directions problems might be from so the masses whose accounts are filled with money will not be at risk. Therefore, I suggested that Opaybank should stop all agents stuff, whoever wants to open an account will do it on his or her phone or rather come to the company to register and open a new account.

    Opay this, opay that.
No bank is no 1, same with our Nigerian banks anyone can fall victim of this. But have you checked yourself if you are careful enough with your details?
That’s how on first of October, I received links from different numbers telling me opay is giving out 5k for independence,,,,I didn’t think twice and I asked each of them to show me evidence of their own giveaway but none replied.
Since our account number is our mobile number, so much might be expected but we have to be very careful, don’t fall victim of scammers please.
Opay has been my best bank so far, very reliable, affordable if that word is okay 😂 and their saving platform is top-notch. I pray also not to be a victim of fraudsters

Actually, I plan on explanding and doing more business with Opay. All this is commercial bank trying to scare people from patronizing online banking when they failed and showed people pepper when we needed them most at cashless policy. Tortured people with their money.
