The Federal Government and Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company have announced that leaking well at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 in Nembe, Bayelsa State, operated by Aiteo has been shut.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva and a spokesperson for Aiteo Group, according to Reuters.
The Minister added that he is grateful for everyone’s support as the wellhead leak had been put out as a comprehensive clean up in the environment comes next.
What they are saying
“We have put out the leak at SBAS-1. We are grateful for all the support,” the Minister said as he added that the next stage was to carry out a comprehensive service of the wellhead as well as clean up the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, in an interview with NAN, Mr Mathew Ndianabasi, spokesperson for Aiteo Group, said that the leak had been plugged, as they gathered that the scores of oil spill response workers were ecstatic and sang songs of praise when the well stopped discharging oil and gas into the nearby Santa Barbara River.
Aiteo hired the services of United States well-control firm, Boots and Coots, a Halliburton Company, to stop the oil and gas leak from the well.
Nairametrics also reported earlier that the Nigerian Senate revealed during a Senate resolution on Tuesday, overseen by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, that the November 5 oil well leak in Nembe, Bayelsa State, spilled over 2 million barrels of hydrocarbon into the environment,
