Popular Afrobeat artiste, Davido has opened entry for the disbursement of the N250 million fund which was accumulated from colleagues and friends ahead of his belated birthday earlier this month.
According to information on his Instagram page, the disbursement of the Davido N250 million orphanage support fund will be given to only government-approved orphanages and will open from 11:59 pm on Monday to the same time on Thursday.
Backstory
Nairametrics had reported that Davido raised hundreds of millions of naira after calling on his friends and colleagues, whom he has helped in the past, to send him money ahead of his 29th birthday.
Celebrities like Femi Otedola, Obi Cubana, Cubana Chiefpriest, E-Money, Honourable Akin Alabi, Peruzzi and others have reportedly sent money to the singer’s account.
After realising over N200 million in donations, Davido added an extra N50 million and assembled a 5-man committee to oversee the disbursement of the funds to beneficiaries.
What Davido is saying
In an interview with CNN, the award-winning artiste said he never expected the huge sum he received as he had only posted the content jokingly.
He said, “I didn’t actually ask my friends to donate, it was like a joke. I was like, if I ever gave you a hit song or feature or if you are my friend, send me a million naira. My friends started sending me money and then after a while, I started seeing crazy numbers on my account and I noticed that regular people and friends started sending me money too and I ended up with over $600,000.
“I was just overwhelmed. Honestly, I and my friends made a bet, I was like if I do that I will probably get at most $60,000. Because I have done a lot of charity work, like helping people day to day, it’s just like the work I have done over the years is being appreciated. After a while, it was getting too much and I was like it’s not even in my character to keep this kind of money.”
