The Imo State government has announced the state plans to launch a new security outfit to deal with insecurity in the state.

This was disclosed by the state commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba on Wednesday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said the outfit which will be launched on November 30th was necessary due to the rising insecurity in the state, adding that it would be a combination of vigilance and community policing model.

What the commissioner is saying

Mr Emelumba said, “The launch has become necessary to check further insecurity and make the yuletide celebrations comfortable for Imo people both at home and in the diaspora.

“Council regrets that money which government would have used to attend to more development-oriented matters in the state is diverted to security matters.

“This is the opportunity cost of insecurity to the people of Imo which everyone must rise to condemn and assist to contain.”

He added that to improve the standard of living for rural dwellers in the state, the government is set to reactivate the development centres across the state, adding that the number of development centres would increase from 44 to 50 and a supplementary appropriation of N31.9 billion had been sent to the State House of Assembly for approval.

“When reactivated, the new development centers as proposed, will have all Town Union Presidents of communities in Imo as members.

“The essence of this is to allow communities, through their Town Union Presidents, articulate their needs for the attention of the state government,” he said.

Recall Nairametrics reported last month that the Governors of the South East region said they will do everything in their power to end the “sit-at-home” order of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi said the region’s governors were worried about the rising insecurity in the region and condemned the continued “sit-at-home’’ order, adding that the regional security outfit, “Ebubeagu’’, would be launched to give it teeth and laws passed in all the states to that effect before the end of 2021.
