The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd revealed that the gas leakage at Anifowoshe, Ikeja Underbridge, in Lagos was caused by road construction.

This was disclosed by Mr Garba Muhammad, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, who made this known in a statement in Lagos on Monday.

Garba also disclosed that authorities reported the gas leakage in the early hours of the morning and have successfully sealed off the affected area.

What the NNPC said

“Preliminary findings indicate that at about 8.40 a.m. on Wednesday, a pipeline gas leakage was reported around Anifowoshe, Ikeja Underbridge, Lagos State.

“The pipeline is a six-inch gas pipeline supplying gas to Mainland Power Ltd, near Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

“The NNPC immediately moved in by engaging Gaslink Ltd, its franchise partner operating the pipeline, mobilised to the location, cordoned off the area and successfully isolated the gas pipeline at Oba Akran Valve pit,” they said.

The NNPC also added that residents in the area should not panic as safety measures were being implemented by professionals through a team of maintenance engineers who were collaborating with the Gaslink team at the site to ensure that gas supply services to areas affected by the incident resumed within the next 48 hours.

In case you missed it

Nairametrics earlier reported that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a statement issued on Wednesday stated that residents in the Ikeja local government were warned to avoid open fire due to a gas pipeline leakage in the area after it got a report on the leaking pipeline. The spokesperson of NEMA (South West), Ibrahim Farinloye, asked residents to avoid open fire in the affected areas.

He stated, “Residents around Computer Village, Underbridge Awolowo Way, and Oba Akran axis, Anifowose Street, Medical Road must not open shops or use open naked fire for safety reasons.

While confirming the gas leakage, he also warned residents in the area to take safety precautions to prevent any form of disaster.
