Latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics list cashew nuts as the top of the most exported agricultural products in Nigeria for the second quarter of 2017.

Total exports

This was contained in the third quarter Foreign Trade Report released by the statistics bureau. According to the data, exports from Nigeria was N3.5 trillion compared to N2.3 trillion in the corresponding period in 2016. Total exports was N3 and N3.1 trillion in the first and second quarter respectively. Total exports year to date 2017 is now N9.68 trillion compared to N8.5 trillion in the whole of 2016.

Top Agricultural Exports

In terms of Agricultural products, Nigeria reported a total export of about N21.4 billion compared to imports of N29.7 billion. Agricultural exports for the first quarter of the year was about N30 billion. However, it topped the N16 billion recorded in the corresponding period in 2016.

The data reveals a marginal increase in Agricultural exports for the September year to date. Exports from the sector was N81.2 billion compared to N60.7 billion in the whole of 2016.

According to the NBS data, Sesamum Seeds whether or not broken topped the list of Agricultural exports for the third quarter with an export value of N5.6 billion. This was followed by Frozen Shrimps and Prawns with N4.7 billion.

Soya Beans, whether or not broken was next with N3.2 billion while Cashew Nuts, in shell which topped in the second quarter recorded an export value of N3 billion. Flour and meals of Soya bean had an export value of N1.1 billion rounding up the list of top agricultural exports valued at N1 billion and above. The rest are valued at less than N1 billion.
