The World Bank has announced that it will partner with the Federal Government by setting aside N1.9 billion ($100 million) to tackle girl-child education in the northern part of the country.

The Debt Management Office (DMO), revealed earlier this week, that the exposure to the countries World Bank loans has increased by $2.35bn (59.64%) in four years, from $3.94bn as at December 31, 2011 to $6.29bn as at December 31, 2015.

According to Dr. Tunji Adekola an official with the bank, the project is aimed at reducing the high level of illiteracy of female children in the region. He also noted that Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Sokoto are the states targeted.

‘’The project is also aimed at improving equity in education, as well as ensuring uniformity in access for all. This is to bring back the out- of- school children to schools thereby improving gender parity between boys and girls,’’ he said.

One of the Governors of the privileged states, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto hinted that his state Government will pledge an annual sum of N75 million as counterpart funding, and another N50 million respectively.

I do look forward to a scheme/program where the government rather than go the traditional route of physical schools, can go the route of the Opon Imo that was rolled out in Osun State and get it perfected such that access to broadband via a willing Telco can help them stream educational content such as that of the Glo Edu App, at their pace.

For a quick impact for Education across the North, there’s a need for those involved in this project to employ technologies that leap the region 10-20 years ahead of the current traditional methods in order to not only catch up, but to also expose them to knowledge.
