Lagos in Nigeria was ranked the fourth worst city in the world to live in, according to the ‘Global Liveability Ranking’ by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) for 2015.
Lagos was ranked 137 in the world on the list of 140 cities. The survey took account of cities’ healthcare, education, safety, culture, environment and infrastructure and assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors based on these five categories.
The world has become a more dangerous place to live in, according to the EIU report which said the global ‘stability score’ fell by 2.2 per cent over the last five years.
According to reports, several cities across the globe have suffered a decline due to recent terror attacks, ongoing conflict and general instability.
Jon Copestake, the survey editor, said, “The threat to personal safety, whether in the form of crime, unrest or conflict, has knock-on implications for other aspects of liveability.”
Melbourne was once again named the best city in the world to live in for the fifth year while Vienna in Austria came second followed by the Canada cities of Vancouver and Toronto, and Australia’s Adelaide.
Other laggards included Libya’s Tripoli (136), PNG’s Port Moresby (138), Bangladesh’s Dhaka (139) and Syria’s Damascus (140).
Zimbabwe’s Harare was the ‘most improved’ city, going up by 5.1 points to 42.6 out of 100 it ranks 133 overall.
