The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirmed the appointment of Mr. Mounir Gwarzo as Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission at plenary on Wednesday 13th May 2015.
The confirmation, by unanimous decision, followed consideration of the screening report of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets read by its Chairman Senator Ayo Adeseun. He presented a detailed profile of Mr. Gwarzo and informed the Committee of the Whole that Mr. Mounir Gwarzo is fully deserving of confirmation as substantive DG of the Commission.
Before putting the eventual confirmation to vote, the Senate President Senator David Mark gave room for remarks on the nomination from the floor of the House. Glowing remarks on the candidate for confirmation were received from Senators representing Kano State (Mr. Gwarzo’s home State) as well as from the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba who said “I only got to encounter Mr. Mounir Gwarzo recently on a personal level and I find him very intelligent. He is someone who knows the sector in and out and has a lot of capacity to move the institution forward”.
By a voice vote the house unanimously confirmed Mr. Gwarzo’s appointment. The Senate President, David Mark proceeded to congratulate Mr. Gwarzo wishing him well and urging him to ensure his vast experience is brought to bear in the discharge of his responsibility. He said “From the unanimous vote I am sure he is the perfect candidate for the job, the round peg in a round hole”.
