According to the latest official release of the Bureau of Statistics on the Consumption Pattern of Nigerians in 2009/2010, a total sum of N24,253,670,127,758.90 was spent by Nigerians on food and non food items. I find this report particularly useful as information about what Nigerians spend their money on is useful to businesses, the government, policy makers, economist, foreign investors etc. According to the bureau of statistics “The consumption pattern of a country depicts the aggregate demand of goods and services in the country, and in most cases it constitutes about 60 percent of the total GDP of the country”. They also went on to mention that in under-developed countries like Nigeria, consumption is mostly on food items while on developed countries it is on non food items. So with that it is easy to admit just how important this report is.

According to this report, Nigerians spend more on tubber and plantain both accounting for N3.5tr or 14,62% of total consumption expenditure. See table below;

The report also points the South West Zone as the highest spenders accounting for 25% or N6.1tr of total consumption expenditure. They were also the highest spenders in both food and non-food items spending N3.5tr and N2.5tr respectively. See full report here
