For a sports lover like me, watching football, tennis or even programmes such as CSI”, “I shouldn’t Be Alive”, or “Top Gear” can be a tough task especially when you have women in the house. Typically, the solution to that is to just get a form of dual view. But sometimes that’s no guarantee that you will watch your program especially if Nepa strikes. So an alternative like the much talked about Dstv Drifta becomes attractive.
There has been so much fuss about the fascinating new product on the Dstv staple called The “Drifta”. With the Drifta you can watch Dstv on your mobile phone, iPad, laptops. All you need is the mordem and the software installed in either any of your preferred hardwares (phone, computer or tablets).
If you are the type who pays for the full premium bouquet then you don’t new to pay for extra subscriptions. You can just watch anywhere in Lagos, PH, Abuja even if your decoder is at home. The modem cost N14k(if I’m not mistaken). That’s like N1k per station right?
Considering its relative zero subscription cost, portability and flexibility I had no option but to buy it. I have had it for over 3 months now and boy is it much over hyped. The Drifta like I mentioned is very portable and convenient to carry. The picture quality isn’t bad and the video display isn’t slow considering it is transmitted over wifi. The problem however is this;
1. The Drifta currently features only 15channels amongst which are NTA, Trace TV, Super Sports 4, 3 and 10, Super sports blitz, BET, Sound City, Cartoon Network, CNN, Sony, African Magic, Channel O. This leaves our numerous other channels which even a sports addict like me would want to see on mobile. No Discover, Natgeo or BBB Knowledge, No Aljazeera and no Style Network. You also do not have any of the movie magic stations as well. This is too much to be left out. Makes you wonder why they don’t allow you choose the stations that you wish to have on your Drifta. That would have made a world of difference.
2. In as much as the picture quality is ok, the Drifta is about 30sec slower than the Dstv. So whenever a goal is scored in a watching a football match, you are likely to hear people scream “goal” 30secs before you.
3. The Drifta often freezes in the middle of an action. It however picks up soon after but then you loose more seconds in real life viewing.
4. For lovers of music, you cannot enjoy the variety DMX gives you.
If you are the type who isn’t bothered about the issues above, then the Drifta is meant for you. But if you are it’s probably not worth the fuss.
