Laurly Hill, the multi grammy award winner has been sent to prison for failing to pay tax. Like you very well know, tax evasion is a crime punishable by law even in Nigeria. She failed to file tax returns on more than $1.8million for three years 2005-2007.
In her statements Lauryn Hill said the following;
“Someone did the math, and it came to around $600 million,” she said. “And I sit here before you trying to figure out how to pay a tax debt? If that’s not like enough to slavery, I don’t know. This wasn’t a life of jet-setting glamour. This was a life of sacrifice with very little time for myself and my children.” She has six children by the way
In Nigeria, most celebrities face the risk of non filing of returns especially as they announce lucrative deals with record labels and corporate endorsements. I have blogged about taxation and musicians in the past too.
