Who gets all the checkpoint money?

Who gets all the checkpoint money?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

Nigerian Policemen are notoriously known for their checkpoints mainly for one reason! Money!! Motorist, both commercial and private, regularly get extorted by them on a daily basis (though mostly at night). Commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada bear most of the brunch in small but mostly astronomically frequency.

Policemen must rake in thousand of Naira everyday from these check points and that money just won’t end up in the hand of those posted to the checkpoints alone. It probably goes into a pool somewhere. Well, from what I heard (unconfirmed though) all the amounts collected goes first to the DPO of the area. From there a portion is sent further up the ladder to the Area Commander and from there could go as far as to the commissioner. In fact in the days of good old Tafa we heard it could go as far as to the IG himself.

What we learnt comparing Close-Up and Oral-B Toothpaste

April 5, 2018

I often wonder how much they make on any particular night? N20k, N200k or N2m? Let’s do a rough math. Assume a notorious junction in surulere called “Census” where okada’s, buses and cars pass every 2 minutes on either side of the road. So, if we assume one each at an average of N100 collectively is extorted every 2minutes from either of the motorist then in an hour they make like N3k. As check points usually last an average of 3 hours, that gives us about N9k a day per district. Multiply by 30 days and that’s N270,000 a month in a district. With roughly over 100 police stations in Lagos alone, the figure racks up to N27m a month.

I guess by now we can figure out where all the money goes to and why the checkpoints are here to stay.
