The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its 2026 class of inductees, spotlighting a diverse group of global music icons, including Nigerian legends Fela Kuti and Sade Adu.

The announcement was made during the annual Hall of Fame reveal segment on American Idol by judge Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest.

The 2026 lineup spans multiple genres and generations, featuring names such as Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah, and Celia Cruz, among others, underscoring the Hall’s expanding recognition of global musical influence.

There were 17 nominees considered for induction this year, the highest number on record. Following the voting process, nine contenders did not make the final list.

These include The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Mariah Carey, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, INXS, New Edition, Pink, and Shakira.

What the induction body is saying

For Nigeria, the induction of Fela Kuti marks a significant milestone. Widely regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, Fela fused traditional West African highlife with jazz, funk, and soul to create a politically charged sound that resonated far beyond Africa. His music became a tool for activism, addressing corruption, inequality, and governance issues.

  • ‘’Category:Musical Influence
  • ‘’Fela Kuti was a revolutionary voice who spoke out against injustice through his innovative music – provoking political change while infusing jazz, West African, and soul music to pioneer the Afrobeat genre,’’ Rock and Roll stated on their website

Tracks such as “Water Get No Enemy” and “Beasts of No Nation” reflect his blend of complex instrumentation and sharp political commentary.

Despite repeated arrests and censorship, Fela maintained a strong stance against military rule, positioning himself as a cultural dissenter.

Decades after his death in 1997, his influence remains evident in contemporary African music, with global stars like Burna Boy drawing inspiration from his legacy.

Meanwhile, Sade Adu, the lead vocalist of Sade, was recognised for her contribution to music. With a career spanning over four decades, she has built a distinct sound blending jazz, soul, and R&B, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success.

  • ‘’Category: Performer
  • ‘’Sade blended jazz, soul, and R&B into a sound entirely their own, creating music so timeless and deeply personal that it has resonated with listeners across four decades.’’ Rock and Roll stated on their website

The band’s debut album Diamond Life achieved global success, while follow-up projects such as Promise further cemented their reputation with hits like “The Sweetest Taboo.” Sade’s music, defined by smooth vocals and introspective themes, continues to resonate across generations, influencing artistes such as Beyoncé, Drake, and Adele.

What you should know

According to the organisers, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame serves as both a museum and an honorary institution, celebrating the most influential figures in popular music across rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and soul. To be eligible, artistes must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to nomination.

The 2026 inductees were selected through a voting process involving more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals, highlighting the breadth of expertise behind the final list.

The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on Disney+ in December.
