The Lagos State Government has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with energy firms, Ikeja Electric and Sahara Power, to increase power supply to residents.

The deal which was signed on behalf of the state government by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources would see power supply increase from 8 hours to 12 hours daily for residents of the state.

Mr Olalere Odusote, the Lagos State Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources, who signed on behalf of the state government said that the aim of the agreement was to increase power supply to an uninterrupted level of at least 22 hours daily.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Odusote said that the deal included the distribution of free 20,000 prepaid meters in low-income areas.

What the Lagos State Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources is saying

Odusote pointed out that the implementation of the pilot phase will start immediately in Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA).

He said, “This Memoranda of Agreement is to ensure the provision of uninterrupted power to residents, especially in the low-income areas. It is also part of the efforts to solve the problem of metering and infrastructure deficit, to ensure these areas get power supply which is also measurable.

“Twenty thousand meters have been procured by the state government and would be distributed free to low-income areas in Alimosho LGA in the pilot phase. Our intention is to replicate this gesture in other areas of the state once the pilot phase is successfully executed.

“We have identified a number of feeders that can provide power in these communities and implementation would start immediately.’’

Speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja electric), Folake Soetan, expressed the power firm’s readiness to support the government in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to residents.

What you should know

Recall that in June 2021, the Lagos State government signed a bilateral agreement with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and Eko Electricity Distribution Company for the sale of up to 300 megawatts of power from NDPHC’s power plants to improve power supply to customers in Ibeju-Lekki and other parts of EKEDC’s franchise area.

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, had earlier announced plans to have a state electricity policy that will serve as a blueprint for the attainment of universal access to electricity in the state.
