Edo State mandates health insurance for businesses

In line with the drive to improve the penetration rate of insurance in Nigeria, Edo State has announced that the health insurance compliance certificate is mandatory for business registration in the state.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie.

According to the statement,  the health insurance certificate is a prerequisite for business premises registrations, renewal and permits for public and private organizations and for obtaining any form of government authorization in the state.

What Edo State Government is saying

The secretary to the Edo State government stated that it is committed to improving the social and economic wellbeing of Edo people whilst also calling on the general public to collaborate with the government in achieving her vision channelled towards engendering sustainable growth and development.

Ogie said, “The State Government through the Edo State Health Insurance Commission hereby brings to the notice of the general public that Edo State health insurance compliance certificate/health insurance identity card is now a mandatory document for obtaining any form of government authorization which include business premises registration, renewal and permits for public/private organizations, SMEs, NGOs, etc.

“This certificate is a prerequisite for any individual/business who wishes to carry out any form of government process through any of the Ministries and Government parastatals in Edo State.

“Consequently, all organizations, private and public, including Non-Governmental Organizations that are yet to obtain the Edo State health insurance commission certificate are hereby advised to visit Edo state health insurance commission.”

  • In recent times, the campaign for the adoption of insurance and health insurance in Nigeria and Africa has been on the rise with African leaders at the forefront.
  • The recently concluded 47th Africa Insurance Organisations (AIO) conference held in Lagos which saw the presence of the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and important personalities may imply that the sector is set to witness an aggressive transformation.
  • Speaking at the event, President Muhammadu Buhari disclosed that the FG is fully committed to the growth of Nigeria’s insurance industry, and will enable policies to support the growth not just in Nigeria but in Africa.
