The Lagos State Government has announced the extension of the traffic diversion period on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway from the initially scheduled completion date of October 3, 2021, to October 30, 2021, as the Federal Ministry of Works continues repair works on the Airport Flyover Bridge.

The repair work on the Airport flyover bridge at Toyota on the Oshodi-Isolo axis is to restore the portion of the bridge that was affected by the inferno that occurred in January 2021, on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, due to a petrol tanker explosion.

This disclosure is contained in a press release signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, who explained that the extension of the period would allow the concrete jacketing of the damaged bridge to achieve maximum strength before it is reopened.

Oladeinde assured that the main carriageway will be opened as soon as the process is completed, noting that hastiness will be detrimental to the progress made in restoring the structure back to the optimum standard.

He stated that motorists will continue with the current traffic diversion plan involving the use of alternate lanes freed up by the contractors during the course of the rehabilitation.

The commissioner praised Lagosians for their perseverance in the face of simultaneous construction works across the State and further appealed for more cooperation with the government and its agencies to speed up the completion time of ongoing projects and provide seamless traffic movement in Lagos.

What you should know

  • Recall that earlier in August 2021, the Lagos State Government announced the diversion of traffic on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway for repair work on the Airport Flyover Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works from August 9 to October 3, 2021.
  • The structure of the airport flyover bridge at Toyota on the Oshodi-Isolo axis was affected by the inferno that occurred in January 2021, on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, due to a petrol tanker explosion.
  • The government said the initial closure of the bridge to vehicular movement was to enable the government to conduct structural engineering tests on the bridge adding that alternative routes were created for motorists pending the outcome of the tests and the reopening of the bridge to traffic.
