Why this matters

The news serves as a respite to thousands of prospective corps members who have been held at home due to the pandemic. In a nutshell, this avails the youths the oppurtunity to contribute meaningfully both in economic and social terms to their motherland, preparing them for the labor market and to become change agents to the nation in general.

A detailed breakdown of the modus operandi for the reopening of the camps will be duly communicated.

#EndSARS: Anyone found culpable in Lekki Toll Plaza shooting would be held accountable - Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state is ready to flag off the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway project on Sunday 1st November, 2020.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media, Gawat Jubril, via Twitter.

The statement issued by Gawat Jubril disclosed that the flag-off of the reconstruction and upgrade of the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway road is in line with the Lagos State Government’s plan to rebuild the major road. It is also expected to bring a new motoring experience on the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Gawat reported that there was a road inspection earlier today, where the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeyoye, said that despite the disruption of economic activities by the COVID 19 pandemic and the recent civil unrest spiked by the #EndSARS protest, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains focused on promoting economic prosperity through the provision of sustainable road infrastructure throughout the state.

What you should know

  • The project, which is programmed for two phases to manage the huge financial outlay required, takes cognisance of the rapid industrialisation envisaged along the Lekki axis.
  •  The first phase of the project and reconstruction will be an 18.75km stretch spanning Eleko Junction to Epe T- Junction. The second phase of the 26.7km will start at Abraham Adesanya Roundabout to Eleko Junction.
  •  The project will be handled by Messrs Craneburg Construction Company Limited which has proven capacity and track record in the delivery of quality road projects.
  • The Eti Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway was constructed over 40 years ago, from Victoria Island to Epe T-junction. The builders adopted a rural road cross-section without drainage, except for chutes provided at intervals to allow water percolate into the soil along the verges.

What they are saying

Mrs. Adeyoye stated that other attendant benefits of the laudable project include the positive impact it would have on the lives of residents, businesses, commuters and Lagosians at large.

The Lagos state government, on Friday, October 30, 2020, announced a further relaxation of the curfew imposed after the outbreak of violence across the state following the #EndSARS protest against police brutality and extra-judicial killings from 10 pm to 6 am.

This is against the curfew from 8 pm to 6 am that is currently in operation.

This was disclosed in a series of tweet posts by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, on his official Twitter handle.

The commissioner said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praises Lagosians for observing the curfew which is expected to restore normalcy in our communities. He urges all Lagosians to go about their businesses in peace, even as they shun actions that can threaten our unity.

The statement from Omotosho partly reads, ‘’The Lagos State Government has announced a further relaxation of the curfew imposed after the breakdown of law and order, following the hijack of the peaceful #EndSARS protests. The curfew will now be from 10 pm to 6 am.’’

The statement also said that the Governor advised purveyors of fake news to stop causing disaffection among Lagosians, who are well known for being peace-loving and friendly.

Nairametrics had about a week ago, reported the easing of 24-hour curfew which was earlier imposed by the Lagos State Government from 6 pm to 8 am. This was announced by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a press briefing at State House Marina, after a tour of the state to inspect the level of destruction of the public and private asset during the #EndSARS protests that later turned violent.

This action suggests a move towards a return to normalcy as businesses try to get back to full activities after the 2 weeks of protests that brought economic activities in the state to a halt. This also coincides with the approval for all markets to open every day of the week by the Lagos state government.
