In Nigeria, small businesses are more than just a part of the economy, they are the economy.

From the woman running a neighborhood store to the growing enterprise employing a handful of staff, micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) drive livelihoods, fuel local markets, and keep communities running.

Yet, for many of them, access to the right financial support remains one of the biggest barriers to growth.

This is the context behind Baobab Microfinance Bank’s newly unveiled Head Office in Lagos.

Located at No. 129 Ikorodu Road, the new office represents more than a physical expansion. It reflects a deliberate step toward strengthening the systems, processes, and capacity required to better serve Nigeria’s vast and small business segment.

Because when financial institutions grow with intention, small businesses benefit.

“The commissioning of our new Head Office is a significant milestone in Baobab Nigeria’s growth journey. It reflects the strength of our vision, the resilience of our institution, and our unwavering commitment to expanding access to financial services while delivering long-term value to our customers and stakeholders,” said Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chairman of the Board.

For many small business owners, the challenge is not just access to finance, but access to reliable, timely, and understanding financial partners. This is where microfinance institutions like Baobab Microfinance Bank play a crucial role, offering tailored solutions designed around the realities of everyday entrepreneurs.

The new Head Office is expected to improve internal efficiency and coordination, factors that directly impact how quickly and effectively businesses can access support. Baobab’s existing offices in Kaduna and Yaba will continue to operate as Head Office Annexes, ensuring that its reach remains wide while its operations become more streamlined.

According to CEO of Baobab Microfinance Bank Nigeria, Eric Ntumba, the focus is clear: “This new Head Office positions us to operate more effectively, collaborate more seamlessly, and continue delivering innovative financial solutions to the individuals and businesses we serve. It reinforces our mission to make financial services more accessible, inclusive, and impactful.”

At a time when economic pressures are pushing many small businesses to rethink survival and growth strategies, access to the right financial tools can unlock new opportunities, whether it’s expanding inventory, hiring more staff, or scaling operations.

This is where the real advantage lies.

When small businesses are supported, they don’t just grow individually; they create jobs, strengthen supply chains, and contribute to broader economic stability. In essence, empowering MSMEs creates a ripple effect that benefits the entire economy.

From a broader perspective, Baobab’s expansion also aligns with its pan-African growth strategy, which prioritizes inclusive finance as a driver of long-term impact.

“Baobab Nigeria’s continued growth reflects the strength of our broader African footprint and our commitment to building a leading financial services group across the continent. From our headquarters in Paris to our operations across Africa, we remain focused on delivering inclusive, high-impact financial solutions, and this new Head Office in Lagos is a strong testament to that ambition. As part of our growth strategy, we are also focused on expanding our presence by opening an additional 100 branches in the near future to better serve the evolving needs of Nigerian MSMEs.” said Philip Sigwart, Group CEO.

As Baobab strengthens its operational base, the message is clear: supporting small businesses is not just part of the strategy, it is the strategy.

And in a country where small businesses hold so much potential, that focus may prove to be one of the most important investments of all.
