Apple Macbook Pro has been barred from all flights. This was revealed in a directive by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The NCAA said the model of the product – RETINA, 15 MID 2015 had since been recalled by the maker.

The Details: The statement was signed by the Director of Operations and Training, NCAA, Capt. Abdullahi Sidi, on behalf of the Director-General, Capt. Muhtar Usman.

“This is to inform all operators and service providers that the carriage of Macbook Pro Model: RETINA, 15 MID 2015 with immediate effect is hereby barred on all flights,” the statement read in part.

Why the laptop model was barred: NCAA said several risks were associated with the computer as it could cause overheating. Besides, the product was recalled due to battery problems.

NCAA also urged all airline operators to make sure that the directive is complied with.

Nigeria is not alone: In August, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it was barring certain models of Apple’s MacBook Pro from being brought on board flights whether as cargo or in passengers’ carry-on luggage.

FAA’s decision to bar Apple MacBook Pro laptops from flights is due to the recalled batteries in 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Apple said the battery in the affected laptops could overheat, potentially swell or ignite. The manufacturer also informed affected users that they could replace the model at local Apple Stores for free.

What this means: Any electronic with recalled batteries should not be allowed on flights as cargo or carry-in luggage. The action has been adopted by a number of airlines including Etihad, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Air Italy, Air Transat, amongst others.
