Gas explosion hits Ladipo market as 5 persons are confirmed dead so far

Barely a week after a gas leakage was reported at some parts of Ikeja, at least 5 people have been reported killed in a gas explosion that occurred at Ladipo Market area in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The explosion occurred on Tuesday morning at the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) domestic retail centre located on Ojekunle Street at the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market, causing several others to sustain a varying degrees of injuries.

The unfortunate incident was confirmed by the Acting Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State, Ibrahim Farinloye, who said the casualty figure has risen to 5 persons including a 10-year old boy.

Speaking on Channels Television, Farinloye revealed that the bodies of 4 adults have so far been recovered from the scene of the explosion, which includes 3 men and a woman identified as one Mama Funmi.

While a 10-year-old boy was rescued and taken to the hospital, he was reported to have died before getting to the medical centre.

Farinloye explained that the fire at the scene had already been put out while emergency workers were making effort to recover more bodies.

Other responders at the scene of the incident include personnel of NEMA, officials from Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, and the police.

Rescue operation is reported to still be ongoing as preliminary investigation to establish the cause of the incident has begun.
