Canada’s immigration system keeps improving as the country admitted more than 92,000 new permanent residents through its Express Entry system in 2018. This is revealed in the year-end report just released by the Canadian Federal Government.
According to the year-end report received by Nairametrics, immigrants admitted to Canada through express entry increased by 41% in just one year. The findings are reportedly contained in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s 2018 year-end report for the Express Entry system, which was released on the 2nd of July.
A new admission targets: Canada’s admissions target for its three programmes managed by the Express Entry system rose in 2018 and is slated to continue to rise each year through 2021.
According to the report, Canada increased its admissions targets for its three immigration programs managed by the Express entry system.
- The three-classes include the Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class, and Canadian Experience Class, as well as a portion of Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP).
- Also, Canada has expanded its admission target for its nominee program which rose to 55,000 in 2018 and is scheduled to increase each year through 2021.

Nearly 280,000 Express Entry Profiles submitted in 2018: According to the report, nearly 280,000 Express Entry profiles were submitted in 2018, of which 70% were eligible for at least one of the three Federal High Skilled programs.
- Federal Skilled Worker Class candidates received 53% of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) issued in 2018, or 47,523 of 89,800 ITAs.
- This result reflects adjustments to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that were introduced in late 2016 and continue to favour candidates with higher human capital scores, namely Federal Skilled Worker Class and Canadian Experience Class candidates.
- Canadian Experience Class candidates received the second greatest number of ITAs in 2018 with 30,571.
- Out of the number who received invitations in 2018, 71% did not claim any type of additional points and, of those who did, only 5% had a job offer in Canada.
How the Candidates were selected: Nairametrics has reported in an earlier publication that the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s data shows that 51% of Express Entry candidates who received invitations in 2018 were between age 20 and 29.
In terms of education, 48% had a Master’s degree or entry-to-practice professional degree and another 42% had a post-secondary credential of three years or longer.
Similarly, the majority of candidates (60%) had no Canadian work experience, while 39% had five years or more of foreign work experience.
About Express Entry: Express Entry is a selection system for Canadian immigration, designed to select skilled workers for immigration to Canada. It is completely an electronic process involving the country’s federal government, provincial governments, and Canadian employers.
Also, it manages the pool of candidates for three of Canada’s main federal economic immigration programmes — Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class, and Canadian Experience Class.
Eligible Candidates: Eligible candidates for these categories are entered into the Express Entry pool and assigned a ranking score based on factors such as age, education, work experience, and proficiency in English or French.
The highest-ranked candidates are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence through regular draws from the pool.
