MTN Nigeria appoints Mazen Mroue as new COO

MTN Nigeria, Commercial Paper, MTN to still sell stake in its Nigerian subsidiary

Telecommunication giant, MTN Nigeria has announced the appointment of Mazen Mroue as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mroue’s appointment took effect from August 6, 2018. This was disclosed in a statement signed by MTN Nigeria’s Public Relations Manager, Funso Aina.

Mroue is expected to provide leadership and direction to the commercial and technical functions of the telco company.

The newly appointed COO has over 20 years experience in the telecoms and ICT industry. He has drawn experience from various MTN operations across Africa and the Middle East.

Mroue joins MTN Nigeria from MTN Irancell, where he had also served as COO since July 2014.

Prior to his appointment at MTN Irancell, Mroue was at different times CEO of MTN Uganda and MTN Liberia in addition to which he served as a non-Executive Director of MTN Cyprus and held different leadership roles at MTN Ghana.

Mroue also took to his Twitter handle to express his excitements after he was appointed and given a warm welcome in his first week at work.

Following Mroue’s announcement as the company’s COO, MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Ferdi Moolman said Mroue remains an asset for the company.

According to Moolman

Mroue brings a track record of achievements and a wealth of experience to the team, drawn from telecoms markets across Africa and the Middle East.

“He has proven to be a true asset to our ecosystem, and we are thrilled to have him with us now in Nigeria.”

The Telcoms giant had released its 2018 half year results for the period ended 30th June 2018. Figures from the result show that the number of new subscribers on its network increased by 2.9 million during the period. This put the total number of subscribers at 55.2 million in the country. This implies that subscribers in the country account for an estimated 25 percent of the total subscriber base of 223 million as at June 2018.

The report also shows a surge in the company’s data revenue by 63.7 percent, voice revenue increased by 17.3 percent, data traffic also increased by 52 percent.

MTN Group reported a revenue of 62.8 billion Rands (N1.7 trillion), while service revenue increased by 10.2 percent. Data revenue increased by 26.7 percent to 15 billion rands. The company also declared an interim dividend of 175 cents per share.
