In perhaps what is the first move ever in the world by a central bank to comprehensively address a burning topic on social media, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will at 5pm today, hold a tweet chat, through its handle @cenbank Topics that will be covered during the chat include:
- The current economic recession in Nigeria.
- CBN’s intervention programmes.
- Opportunities for Nigerians in the recession.
- The foreign exchange injections into the economy by the CBN.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) came into existence by virtue of an Act of parliament on July 1st 1959. The current governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele assumed office on the 4th of August 1961. The Nigerian economy officially went into recession in the second quarter of 2016. The first quarter 2017 GDP report recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show the country is still in recession with the economy contracting by 0.52%.
