Against much expectations of Nigerians that names of the nation’s fund looters would be made public on May 29th by President Muhammadu Buhari to mark his first year in office, many Nigerians tuned-off their television sets in utmost disappointment.
The President did not announce names of corrupt persons, neither did he make public the amount of funds so far recovered from the looters.
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed on while granting an interview on Channels Television, gave reasons why Buhari did not make good his promise.
The minister said it was due to what he termed “legal reasons”
“Yes, he initially said so but he was advised against doing so for legal reasons,”
“Of course, he has a right to reverse himself on that,” he said.“We will get the list but not today; before the end of the week. But I must say not with the names,” he said.
Recall that President Buhari, earlier in May, while attending the anti-corruption summit in the United Kingdom said he would make public names of those that had looted the nation’s treasury in May 29th.
“So far, what has come out, what has been recovered in whatever currency from each ministries, departments and individuals, I intend on the 29th to speak on this because all Nigerians are getting from the mass media because of the number of people arrested either by the EFCC, DSS. But we want to make a comprehensive report on the 29th,” the President had said.
