The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has suffered a huge blow as burglars reportedly stormed his Ilorin residence in Kwara State, and made away with the sum of N12 million.
The Senate President, made the disclosure on Sunday, June 5, after an online platform alleged that the sum of N300 million inexplicably went missing from Saraki’s bedroom. The online portal also alleged that the said money which was allegedly received in different currencies was given to the Senate President by the state’s government for the distribution of Ramadan handout to his supporters.
The Senate President in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, denied the claims and hinted that, the issue is currently being investigated by the state’s police command.
“There is, therefore, no truth in the claim that the money ran into hundreds of millions, that it was in foreign currency or that the incident happened in Dr. Saraki’s room. The amount was simply in Naira. Also, the money has nothing to do with Kwara State government.
“For the umpteenth time, we need to reiterate the fact that the fixation that any money spent by Saraki or that is in his possession is from Kwara State government is unfounded, unwarranted, lacks any basis and irresponsible. We wonder whether Saraki was such a poor man before 2003 when he was elected governor that he could no longer own any money without it being attributed to the state government,” Olaniyonu said.
He, therefore, urged members of the public to disregard the claims in the report, and reiterated that the Senate President will allow the police perform their duty and bring the culprit or culprits responsible for the theft to book and face the full wrath of the law.
Meanwhile, the state’s government in its official Facebook page also denied claims that the Senate President requested the sum of N300 million from it.
