Well, its not every time we hear positive stories like this from the Nigerian Police. Apparently, Mr Jamiu Adekoya, an Inspector of Police was in a gun battle with armed robbers in which he ended up killing the ring leader of the thieves. This came with a huge cost as he lost two of his colleagues and received several bullets of which he his still recuperating from.
Whilst the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (rtd) has promised to cater for all his medical expenses (not sure if it includes flying him abroad) and recommending him for more awards, the N600,000 he was given for “his rare display of courage and dedication to duty” is a big disgrace in my opinion and not worth making noise for. Not when footballers were just paid millions recently for winning the Nations Cup.
Maybe the Minister was just too excited and anxious to celebrate the man that he made the N600,000 announcement., so I will cut him some slack. But please, brave men like this should not be used to score cheap political points and given stipends as a pat in the back for risking their lives. The Nigerian Police force should have very good insurance policies for their staffs and if they do, the Insurance companies should be the ones telling us how much they intend to pay Mr Adekoya, who is a hero.
