Rice seizures are responsible for over 70%of the seizures made by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). This was made known by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Wale Adeniyi on Wednesday in an interview in Abuja. He further said that the NCS has developed greater deterrents to the smuggling of rice and other contraband products.
Also intimating journalists from the News Agency of Nigeria about the activities of the NCS in the first half of the year, ThisDay reports that Adeniyi disclosed that the total worth of goods impounded in the first half of the year was N4.9 billion, which represents a 58.06% increase over the $3.1 billion worth of goods impounded during the same period last year.
Similarly, he noted that the NCS also recorded higher number of arrests this half-year, from 240 to 252. However, there was a decline in the total number of seizures as it dropped from 5,485 January-June 2015 to 3,066 during the same period this year.
Noting that the current fiscal implementation policy was fundamental in achieving these results, Adeniyi reiterated the dedication of the NCS to its implementation.
