The special adviser to the president on power, Prof Bart Nnaji recently said only 40% of Nigerians have access to electricity. In other words the 3,500mw of electricity that we produce is actually for 40% of Nigerians.
The Government currently targets 13,000mw of power generation by 2013, that is, an additional 9,500mw. So if 3,500mw only gives 12hours of electricity on the average, then we probably need another 3,500mw to make up for the additional 12hours. This is provided the consumption patterns remain the same. The extra 6,000mw would just about be enough for another 40%.
Therefore the 13,000mw target of the FG is just enough to cover about 80% of Nigerians at today’s consumption rate. What do u think? A step in the right direction? I think so, provided 13,000mw is not our final destination point.
