Newly elected Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has instituted processes to employ 10,000 people in the state. They are to be recruited from the contractors who were used for revenue collection. The governor, had previously ordered that government revenue, would now be paid directly to the state coffers. Revenue will now be collected through POS terminals and scratch cards for those without ATM cards. This move will massively enhance government revenue. The new recruits, will form part of his campaign goal to create 200,000 new jobs in the state. Local government administrators are to forward the names of contractors that previously served as revenue collectors. The contractors are expected to forward details of their staff to the local government administrators.
Economic recession in the country has made all tiers of government to pay close scrutiny to taxes and other sources of internally generated revenue. Edo sate is located in the South South region of Nigeria, famed for her oil wealth and paradoxically high poverty rates and environmental pollution.
